    Rushing A Fraternity

Rushing a fraternity holds a different experience for everyone. For some, it is a legacy, a rite of passage, to others, it is a new and unexpected experience. With only a handful of legacies, brothers whose relatives are Sigma Nus, For Sigma Nu Kappa Gamma, the latter is usually the case. Most of our chapter is composed of those who did not enter Cal Poly thinking about joining a fraternity. Somehow they were drawn to Sigma Nu, and during the course of Rush, you will see why. Here are some tips if you are interested in taking the pledge of Sigma Nu. We hope this rush guide helps you with your quest to join the right fraternity, whether it be Sigma Nu or any other Greek organization.

    1. Be Yourself. We here at Sigma Nu pride ourselves on our "realness" We are not trying to be something we are not, and we want rushees to give us the same back. If a fraternity does not accept you for who you are, how can you have brotherhood?

    2. Meet As Many People As You Can. Our bid process is a "one ball" system, meaning that everyone must agree on a rushee's induction as a pledge in order for that rushee to receive a bid to become a Sigma Nu Pledge. Therefore getting to know as many brothers as possible is a necessity. However, this advice includes fellow rushees as well. Your fellow rushees, should you receive bids, will become pledge brothers, a bond that will last forever. So the sooner you get to know them the better.

    3. Bring Your Friends. We here at Sigma Nu understand that rushing can be an uncomfortable experience if you don't know anyone. So bring friends along to ease the awkwardness. This also relates to # 2 in that your fellow rushees will become your pledge brothers should you receive bids. Pledging is a fun, yet stressful experience. If you have friends with you during this time, it makes it that much more fun, and that much less stressful. So feel free to bring fellow Dorm-rats and high school friends out to our events. You won't regret it.

    4. Come Out As Much As Possible. Rush week is organized by Sigma Nu to educate the campus population about our chapter. We hold our events for you, the rushee, which by definition is everyone not belonging to a fraternity. Thus everyone is invited. So Please come out and have a good time, if nothing else, you meet a few new people.

    5. Don't Be Shy. Please feel free to ask questions about Sigma Nu. That is what Rush Week is for, getting to know more about the brotherhoods that exist on campus. Questions are always welcome, during rush events as well as after. Feel free to contact brothers in order to find out more about rush events and Sigma Nu as a whole.

    6. Participate In Rush Events. Many of Sigma Nu's rush events are interactive so that rushees can have fun and feel involved. Please feel free to take center stage at events like Live Studio Audience, Night with the Hypnotist, and Casino Night.

    7. Check Out As Many Fraternities As You Can. Sigma Nu is not for everyone. When rushing a fraternity, one should find the one that best fits him. Sigma Nu is not always the right choice, and it is better to find that out during rush week than to find it out after you have accepted our bid. Cal Poly has many fine Greek organizations to choose from, so make sure your decision is as solid as it can be when choosing Sigma Nu.

    8. Stop By The Booth. Everyday during Rush Week, Sigma Nu will have a booth set up at the University Union or in the Commuter. Feel free to stop by and hang out. Like yourselves, many brothers in Sigma Nu have complicated schedules, and will not be able to make it out to every rush event, by stopping by the booth, you will get a chance to meet those brothers that you were not able to meet at rush events.

    9. Have Fun, But Be Serious. We want all rushees to have fun at Sigma Nu events. However, we take rush very seriously, and we take the attitudes given off during rush into account during bid session. If you are serious about rushing, let us know.

    10. Be Respectful. Remember Sigma Nu is a gentleman's Fraternity, founded on the bases of Love, Truth, and Honor. At Sigma Nu rush events, ladies will often be present, and we will not tolerate any disrespect shown towards them, or to anyone of your fellow rushees.

Sigma Nu would like to invite everyone to participate in Fall and Spring Rushes. Remember, rush is a very important part of keeping Sigma Nu alive. In fact it is the most important part, for without new brothers keeping our traditions alive and going strong, Sigma Nu would have died long ago. If you feel Sigma Nu is for you, please come out, and if nothing else have fun and meet new people.
